Developmentally Appropriate Practice

Our schedule reflects a consistent, structured day using the National Association for the Education of Young Children's developmentally appropriate practice as our standard. Our children learn through a play-based, child-initiated curriculum.

Infants explore and develop relationships through a consistent daily routine and one-on-one interactions with caregivers.

Toddler and preschool children have circle time each morning where concepts and skills are introduced and developed. These concepts and skills are reinforced throughout the day in their play and art projects.

Areas of Focus in Our Curriculum

  • Cognitive/Intellectual Skills
    • We emphasize problem-solving skills, language skills, and pre-reading
      skills with numbers and letters.
  • Emotional Growth
    • Our teachers promote expression and recognition of the child's own feelings as well as those of others, creative expression through art, music, and a positive self-concept.
  • Physical Curriculum
    • Our focus here allows for gross motor development, fine motor development, positive attitudes toward physical fitness, and positive attitudes of self and body.
  • Social Skills
    • Our teachers facilitate children's socialized play, inspired group dynamics, child/adult relationship building,  positive peer interaction and the awareness of other cultures, behaviors, and origins.
  • Self Help Skills
    • Our center addresses areas of self-help skills such as: potty learning, manners during bathroom time, cleanliness, personal hygiene, nutrition, proper use of eating utensils, and manners during mealtime.

Family Support Program

With the support of the Department of Human Services of Allegheny County, we offer a bi-weekly parent support group on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 pm-8:00 pm. Children are provided free childcare during the meetings. Dinner is also free, and is served from 6:00 pm-6:30 pm for parents and children enrolled in the group.
*Please note that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the parent support groups will be modified

Our family support services include social/emotional assessments for all children enrolled, play sessions for children, group observations, and staff support and training. Our staff also meet with families on an ongoing basis to support the optimal development of children and families.
